Did it feel as though your child was rejecting not only your help but you as well?

Have you ever put a pot of milk on the stove with the intention of merely heating it up?  Then suddenly it boils all over the stove, the floor, and everything else in its wake?  It’s only a matter of seconds between the time the milk is heated just right and when it boils over. Temper tantrums are like that.

Does a Tantrum Happen Like This in Your Home?

One minute everyone is happy, the house is almost quiet, and the dog and cat are asleep. You finally have a moment to sit down with a cup of coffee. Hot, delicious, relaxing coffee. Or so you think.  Within seconds of your first sip, you hear a blood-curdling scream coming from the other room.

You jump up, almost spilling your long-awaited, delightful hot coffee, and hurry from your moment of solitude to see who got hurt.  As you run around the corner, almost sliding into the room, you come to a dead stop, realizing what is actually happening.

Your son isn’t hurt.  He is angry.  Depending on his age, he is using his limited verbal skills to let you know he is fuming.  Lying on the floor, fists pounding, feet kicking, and screaming, he is furious about something.

The cause of this uproar could be as small as a toy he can’t reach under the couch. It doesn’t really matter what the reason is, he is exercising his favorite tool – a tantrum.  He has learned that if crying no longer works, and whining no longer works, tantrums are the go-to solution to almost any problem he encounters.  Rarely in life do we have the luxury of such a simple tool as a tantrum to solve all our issues.  But toddlers do.

Dissecting a Temper Tantrum

Toddlers’ occasional temper tantrums are a form of communication, occurring naturally on their road from babyhood to preschool.  Older children who tantrum regularly may have many reasons for resorting to tantrums.  The causes may range from feeling sad, to not getting their own way, to not being able to work through some past trauma.

Sometimes outside intervention may be necessary to help the older child get beyond the tantrum stage.  Planning with a professional to help your child is a good idea for those children. If this is the case in your home, as it was with several children I parented, contact me for places to find help in your area.

No matter the age, temper tantrums put a strain on other children in the home. Furthermore, depending on their frequency and severity, tantrums also put a strain on parents.  You love your children and want the best for them no matter what their behaviors are. But these tantrums?  Sometimes they are more than you can handle with your child’s screaming and refusing to accept your assistance.
